Moss and liverworts
Macquarie Island has a large range of moss formations and species due to it's wet climate and great biological value, the total coming to around 91 species. The mosses on Macquarie island are actually an extremely important part of the island ecosystem because they make of for quite a lot of the island's terrestrial biomass and help store moisture and water for other organisms. Some of the most common moss include: the Muelleriella crassifolia which is more commonly found on coastal rocks, the Ulota phyllanta which is found growing from wood and trees, the Bryum argenteum that's name means silver moss which is a silvery moss found most places, the Breutelias can be found on the wet slopes of Macquarie Island, Polytrichaceas type moss are quite interesting for they grow in the shape of a tiny palm trees in mineral soils and the Ditrichum striatum which is more commonly found living in large clusters on the plateaus of the island.
